Asheville School Launches Clean Propane Mower Program With Blossman Gas

ASHEVILLE, N.C., May 14, 2010 (PRNewswire) -- Asheville School in North Carolina is greening its lawn care services with three propane-powered mowers, thanks in part to an alumnus and a unique propane supply program provided by Blossman Gas.

Harris Baker, an Asheville School Class of '74 alumnus and president of HBH Gas Systems of Austin, Texas, donated three new propane mowers to his alma mater. Blossman Gas – the nation's largest independent propane company – will provide the school a hassle-free, year-round mower fuel supply.

Energy's costs to consumers and the environment is a topic of national debate. "How do we provide the lowest-cost energy to consumers while still protecting the environment?" is a question that many in Congress ask.

Consumers, on the other hand, notice the price of energy in the form of their monthly bills and gas prices. What consumers and many in Congress don't know is that propane gas is an efficient, cost-effective and clean energy source that outperforms electricity on a variety of levels.

A major misconception is that propane is more expensive than electricity. Propane products like water heaters and furnaces are actually more efficient. They heat up faster and provide greater comfort than electric appliances. Prices for all energy sources fluctuate yearly, and in some cases electricity may be slightly less expensive than propane. However, with efficient propane appliances, consumers will continue to see savings during fluctuations of prices. Propane water heaters can be given an Energy Star rating — the government's measurement for energy-efficient appliances — electric water heaters cannot.

Additionally, current cost comparisons in Tennessee show that having a propane water heater instead of an electric water heater saves more than $200 over a three-year period including installation. That savings dramatically increases when high-efficiency propane water heaters or tankless propane water heaters are installed.

Electricity's heavy footprint

A study commissioned by the Tennessee Propane Gas Association and performed by ESP Insights showed that a disproportionate amount of consumers believe that electricity is less harmful to the environment than propane. The fact of the matter is that isn't the case.

Tennesseans know that fossil-fuel-eating systems such as propane or natural gas release greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as CO2 as a result of the combustion of the fuel, but they don't realize that electricity is actually more harmful to the environment. In Tennessee, electricity is produced from power plants that rely on fossil fuels to create thermal energy, which is converted into electrical energy. The power plants consume roughly three units of energy to produce one unit of electricity, so the resulting output emissions are significantly higher than those produced by propane.

Another seemingly unknown fact is that propane provides greater comfort than electricity. Propane furnaces put out air that is actually 25 degrees warmer than the output of electric furnaces. This makes the heat feel warm to the skin and eliminates drafts and cold spots. Propane water heaters are more efficient and heat up faster, providing hot water longer.

How many of us have experienced the inconvenience of power outages during storms? Whether for a few hours or a number of days, it can be frustrating and sometimes even downright scary. Propane gas is a reliable energy source that won't go out during storms.

FuelCell Energy, Inc., a leading manufacturer of ultra-clean electric power generation plants for commercial, industrial and government customers, today announced the successful demonstration of its stationary power plants ability to switch rapidly between fuels, validating the systems capacity to guard against fuel supply interruptions from natural disasters or security issues at mission-critical facilities.

Evaluated in conjunction with Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC), operators of the Department of Defense (DoD) Fuel Cell Test and Evaluation Center (FCTec) in Johnstown, Pa., the power plant continued to generate base load electricity on a secondary fuel supply (propane) when the loss of its primary fuel source (natural gas) was triggered during testing. This rapid fuel switch was successfully demonstrated more than 40 times during operations exceeding 3000 hours.

The R&D project is being sponsored by the federal government to demonstrate the dual fuel capability of Direct FuelCell power plants. CTC is the primary contractor to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, involving its Engineer Research and Development Center's Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (ERDC-CERL). FuelCell Energy and CTC operated a sub-megawatt DFC power plant on HD-5 propane fuel at full load achieving an electrical efficiency of 46 percent. The Johnstown plant continues to operate, having accumulated a total of 3060 hours on propane and generated 425 Megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity as of June 28, 2006. The plant also operated 550 hours on natural gas - generating an additional 45 MWh.

Successful dual fuel testing demonstrates DFC power plants can be a vital part of our nation's homeland security efforts by providing ultra-clean, firm base load power at mission-critical facilities, said Christopher R. Bentley, Executive Vice President of Government Research and Development Operations. On-the-fly switching among fuel sources enhances the flexibility and value of our DFC products.

Propane, a readily available fuel that can easily be stored onsite, is used as a primary fuel in isolated or sensitive locations such as islands, remote sites, national parks, data centers, military bases, hotels, and hospitals, and, therefore, is an ideal backup fuel for DFC power plants. The DoD can enhance the energy reliability at its facilities around the world by using HD-5 propane in conjunction with FuelCell Energy's DFC power plants.

Rapid fuel switching from natural gas to propane and back again was achieved on more than 40 fuel swaps at various load levels while the plant was generating power. The fuel swap to backup propane occurs instantaneously when the system detects natural gas pressure dropping below a predetermined trigger point.

Improved in-line fuel utilization measurement technology was also successfully tested, improving fuel flow control. This is important for propane operation since a rapid change in fuel composition occurs when filling the propane fuel tank. This technology played a key role in achieving the rapid validation of the instantaneous fuel switching.

With increasing focus on establishing effective homeland security measures, the rapid fuel switching capability of FuelCell Energy's DFC products can provide enhanced on-site power generation options for facilities where reliable 24/7 power is essential, said Franklin H. Holcomb, CERL's Fuel Cell Team Project Leader. Multiple fuel operation is part of the rapid evolution of fuel cells as a replacement for conventional electric power where high efficiency, increased reliability, reduced harmful emissions and lower noise levels are key requirements for installation.

Testing validated the DFC power plant is capable of continuous long-term high-load high-efficiency operation on propane, as well as instantaneous fuel switching from natural gas to propane in the event of loss of natural gas supply without loss of power. The unit can also switch back to natural gas from propane, instantaneously and on-load, once natural gas service is restored.

The project is supported by funding through DoD, the U.S. Army and ERDC-CERL.

An HBH Partner Brings Propane - and Relief from High Fuel Prices - to the Trucking Industry

Houff is testing a possible solution to high diesel prices that should get him at least an extra mile per gallon of gas. The trucks get about 6 to 6.5 mpg, he said.

"If we can get it up to 7.5, we'd be tickled," he said.

Blossman Gas, a propane company based in Mississippi, installed a Propane Diesel Injection system on one of Houff's semis Tuesday that will increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions by mixing propane with diesel fuel, according to a company official.

"It's a true hybrid," said Steve Whaley of Blossman Gas, adding that some of his company's vehicles use the technology. "We're saving about 11 cents per mile."

When a diesel engine combusts, about 75 percent of the fuel is converted to energy, Whaley said. The rest goes out the exhaust, he said. "All that black smoke is unused diesel," he said.

Adding propane to the mix allows the engine to combust 90 percent of the fuel, he said. "More of it's getting converted to energy," he said. "You can't help but have an increase in the sustainability of speed. This is all about emission reduction and fuel economy."

City of Ashburn Saves Money by Using Propane

ASHBURN, GA (WALB) - Propane is most commonly used as fuel to heat our homes in the winter. But it can also be used to run your car, at a cheaper price. Everyone is feeling the pain at the gas pump and city officials in Ashburn decided to do something about it. Ashburn has been in the propane business for years and now their saving money because of it. They've already converted two of their city vehicles to run off propane instead of gasoline.

"We started looking at this when we noticed, along with every other city and every other employer in the state and in the nation when gas prices started escalating, and we noticed that propane costs weren't escalating as high as gas," Ashburn City Manager Ben Taylor says. Not even close. Average gas prices are around four dollars a gallon. Ashburn sells their propane for about $2.70 a gallon. Now that's a deal. But saving money at the pump isn't the only benefit.

"The engine life is longer, because it's clean burning fuel, so of course it's better for the environment, and we've found that there is actually more horse power with our vehicles, after they've been converted," says Taylor. It's also safe. If you have a wreck, this converter box shuts off. But what if you have an emergency, and are low on propane? No need to worry, you can still make a stop at the nearest station. Inside the vehicle, a button is installed that switches the vehicle back to gas operating. But propane isn't the only trend catching on in Ashburn. The city water meter reader, and even the Mayor can be scene driving around in a golf cart! "My truck gets 13 miles to the gallon and this golf truck is going to get 40-50 miles to the gallon," Mayor Jim Hedges says.

So how can you save money? Well, you can purchase a golf cart, or you can make the switch from gas to propane. "Yes we definitely encourage folks to convert over, I mean it's a reliable fuel, and since we're in the business we'd like to sell them the fuel," says the city manager.

A propane conversion runs about 3500 dollars. But that price is paid off after about six months with the money you save at the pump. The Ashburn City Manager encourages anyone interested in converting their vehicle to contact City Hall at 229-567-3431.

Propane-powered Ford F150's On the Market!!

Bessemer's Town & Country Ford says it is the first dealership in the state to receive a shipment of new F-150 pickup trucks that run on propane instead of gasoline.

"We received two of the new Roush F-150 trucks that use a liquid propane injection system," said Town & Country President Steven D. Watts. "It has the same horsepower and torque as a gasoline-powered truck with the same engine."

One of the new trucks was pre-sold. The dealership will be the only one in the state to carry the trucks and will carry them as demand dictates. They cost about $10,000 more than a comparable traditional F-150.

The Propane Education and Research Council commissioned Roush Performance Products to design and manufacture the propane-powered F-150 in 2006.

Schwan's Avoids Pinch at Pump With Propane

For the past two weeks gas prices have gone down, but what about next week and the week after that. Amid America's current gas crisis, Schwans Home Food Delivery Company has found a way around high-priced fuel and they've been doing it since the 70's!

Central Texas Clean Cities hosted Clean Fuel Day at Zilker Park Friday.

Representatives were on hand to demonstrate how your lawnmower could be producing just as much pollution as the pollution in most cars.

More than 100 commercial propane mowers, lawn equipment and all-electric utility vehicles were on display for people to demo. Propane commercial mowers emit 80 percent less emissions than gasoline mowers and that's not the only benefit.

"Propane has a huge advantage," Stacy Neef of Austin Energy said. "Number one, there's no spillage. A lot of gasoline and diesel is wasted each year, or is lost due to spillage on the ground. Number two, it can't be stolen out of the tanks because it's only canisters. Number three, it's a lot less expensive than gasoline or diesel is at this point."

Several local organizations are taking advantage of these benefits. The Austin Independent School District uses about 26 propane mowers. The University of Texas uses more than 20 all-electric vehicles for maintenance and cross-campus type transportation.

The Breathe Easy Tour made a pit stop in Austin Thursday to promote the converting of diesel school buses to propane.

A typical grant from the Railroad Commission for replacing a 15-year-old diesel bus is around $12,000 per bus.

There's also a 50 cent federal rebate on propane motor fuel, per gallon.

The head of the Texas Railroad Commission, Michael Williams said not only is propane cheaper, but it's better for the environment.

"We heard from a school district that they're paying almost $2 per gallon cheaper with propane than with diesel and it's also cleaner," he said.

Texas has more than 36,000 school buses and about 1,500 of them are propane-powered

California Development 'Montesoro' Chooses HBH Gas Systems To Fuel 800 Lots & Community Facilities

HBH Gas Systems and Ferrellgas announced its newest project in California at the Montesoro private residential development.

The developers needed to provide the community with dual-fuels - electricity and gas - but the community is located too far from the natural gas grid for line extensions to be financially viable. A Community Propane Distribution System from HBH Gas Systems and Ferrellgas was chosen to fuel the 800 lots that will eventually comprise the Montesoro community. The system will provide the entire community with a supply of economical propane fuel that is individually metered at each home. Overland Park, Kansas-based Ferrellgas, one of the world’s largest propane retailers, is HBH Systems’ strategic propane partner.

Homeowners nationwide express a strong preference for gas fuel in their homes. From gas ranges to water and space heating, gas provides a wide range of social benefits at approximately half the cost of using electricity. In addition, a single home using propane for water and space heating in lieu of electricity eliminates approximately 8.5 tons of carbon emissions per year. As such, fueling the 800 homes at Montesoro with a Community Propane Distribution System will result in an annual reduction of about 6,800 tons of carbon emissions, equal to the emissions from over 1,100 vehicles.

HBH Gas Systems has announced new environmental statistics for their off grid central propane distribution systems. Their new statistics are based largely on a recent study conducted by Energetics, Inc. for the Propane Education and Research Council (PERC). HBH Gas Systems specializes in the marketing, design, and implementation of fully-engineered Central Gas Distribution Systems. Each system allows the homes in an off grid community to be supplied with propane from a single facility, eliminating the need for individual tanks. The gas is distributed, metered, serviced and billed just like natural gas.

HBH Gas Systems has partnered with Ferrellgas to provide developments located off the natural gas grid with clean-burning propane from a single tank. Central gas distribution systems provide developments with the economic convenience and efficiency of an environmentally responsible gas product endorsed by the EPA as an alternative green fuel.

A single home using an HBH Gas System for water and space heating in lieu of electricity eliminates approximately 8.5 tons of carbon emissions per year, effectively offsetting the carbon emissions from one average vehicle. Fueling the water and space heating requirements of an average 500 home development with a central propane system instead of electricity offsets about 4,250 tons of carbon emissions per year. Propane is an EPA approved alternative energy per the Clean Air and Energy Policy Acts.

Propane-powered water heaters produce 60% less carbon emissions than electric powered water heaters. Propane is non-toxic and insoluble, so it offers minimal risk to aquifer and ground water supplies. In addition, 30 houses with wood-burning fireplaces create as much particulate pollution as 30,000 houses with gas fireplaces.
